Hello Hair & Honest Blogger Reviews

beauty-product-reviewhair-mask-review

A few months back I heard about Hello Hair. I heard so many great things about their hydrating mask and was dying to try it out myself. When I found out I would be doing a collaboration with them I was ecstatic! I finally had an opportunity this past weekend to try out their hydrating mask: island escape edition. My best friend Maddie and I each tried it and .... we were extremely unimpressed with the results!

The Process:

As you can see from the photos above I used a small palm full of the product, applied it throughout my hair - focusing on the ends, and wrapped my hair in saran wrap (one of the options they suggest to help the oil penetrate). I then left the product on for 30 minutes before shampooing it out with my usual shampoo (Redken, in case anyone is wondering).

My Thoughts:

After trying to blow dry my hair it became immediately apparent that my hair was still completely soaked in the oil. After fully drying it it still looked stringy and greasy! While not pleased with this, it can perhaps be chalked up to my own error / lack of shampooing. I should note that Maddie did not have this problem; but she did tell me that she shampooed her hair THREE times while in the shower because she just couldn't get it out.

After two more showers I finally was able to get all of the product out of my hair. I hoped that, despite the rocky start, my hair would feel/look great after this and thus the shampooing chaos would be worth it.... sadly, this was not the case. I did not notice any change to my hair after using this product. period. Granted, I am very lucky and my hair is relatively healthy (not too dry) to begin with; but still, I hoped to see some difference in the silkiness or smoothness of my hair and was disappointed. Similarly, Maddie told me she likewise did not see or feel any difference at all in her hair.

Things to Consider:

Overall my experience with this product was negative. I would not use it again. However, I do want to ensure a fulsome review and let you know the things I DID like about this product. Here goes:

1) I LOVE that this product is completely cruelty free / vegan. I am a vegetarian (and Maddie is a vegan) and we both love that companies are starting to take notice of our concerns and ensure their products are cruelty free. HUGE props to Hello Hair for being a leader in this regard.

2) The smell is AWESOME. The product has a light (not overpowering) tropical smell that lingered on my hair afterwards.

3) Different hair types = Different results?
Clearly, this product is loved by many bloggers - including;  my good friend Bree who reviewed the product here as well as another blogger who I absolutely adore, Katrina, and they both loved the product! I definitely believe that it worked really well for both of them. All I can say, therefore, is that perhaps different hair types react differently to this product and thus you should not be discouraged from trying this product just because of me - just be sure to take my advice on the shampooing!

Honest Blogger Reviews:

Real talk for a moment: It feels WEIRD to say something negative about something that was given to you for free. It feels as though you are letting the company down, and breaking some sort of unwritten rule. I had a hard time writing this post because of that feeling.

Here's the deal though, I also would NEVER write something I didn't believe or endorse a product I didn't actually like, so that left me in quite the pickle! I hope you readers know that every time I have reviewed a product before, what I have said about it has been my honest opinion. I believe (hope!) that the reason I have had the privilege of working with such great companies (Polette Eyewear, for ex.) is because they like the fact that I am actually honest when reviewing things. The way I see it, companies would (should?) rather collaborate with bloggers they know will be honest as their reviews will mean so much more to readers than reviews by bloggers the readers have decided/learned not to trust.

Anyway, that was a rant & a half, but hopefully you appreciate my honesty and I would love to hear any feedback you may have on this topic!

  1. I totally understand where you're coming from. It's so hard and you can feel pressured to post positively even if you don't like something, but I definitely try to stick to my guns. If something doesn't work for me, it doesn't work for me and that's just the truth of it. Luckily, I've been graced with so many amazing products that this is more rare now than ever before, but in the beginning, it happened a lot and I always reviewed them anyway. Companies were not always happy, but that's how it goes when you're trying to maintain a truthful opinion. Also, if you want some good hair oil/treatments that won't stay in your hair or leave residues, I recommend these: ZAYA Hair Oil or Kumari Luxury Hair Treatment. Both are amazing. They do take some effort to rinse out, but in my opinion, they really do make a big difference. Another favorite of mine is a DIY I came up with that also works brilliantly and it's using equal parts coconut oil and manuka honey as a hair mask. I leave the mixture on my hair for an hour (it feels so gross and sticky) with a plastic bag on my head for heat and rinse out afterwards. Again, it's sometimes difficult to rinse out, but your hair will feel shiny, soft, and have natural highlights from the naturally occurring peroxide in the honey. Hope this helps! If you want to read the posts I've done for these, they're on my blog so just search for them there or reply to this comment and I'll link you ;-)

  3. Honestly, I already have developed a lot of respect for you and your opinion from this review. Aka I trust your reviews, just like you said. I don't know realistically if a ton of companies would be thrilled with this feedback, but I also always try to be 100% honest and sometimes negative feedback is going to be included. Good for you for being forthright, and helping people who have similar hair textures to you out. Hopefully companies will take notice and want to elicit a trusted blogger's feedback!

  4. Ah that's such a shame it didn't work for you! I was so excited to share my new find with you, so I am so sorry it didn't work on your hair! Honestly, I love it because my hair is SO damaged and I do need that level of conditioning. Plus, I have naturally curly hair = dry prone. But it definitely does require a heavy shampoo afterward which is why I use my Neutrogena clarifying shampoo afterward. I definitely think if you have healthier hair that it could be too heavy and oily for your hair. It's good to share your honest review (even when it's negative!) though because your experience may be similar to others, you never know how beauty, skincare or hair care will work on individuals!

    1. That's okay, it totally happens! Ooo I definitely need to try out that clarifying shampoo though! I've been looking for a good one just to use once every two weeks or so to deal with just all the products that get used on my hair throughout the week from hairspray, to dry shampoo etc!

  5. Kudos to you for being honest about this! It would feel weird to write a bad review, but that's why readers follow you, to see your honest opinion about a product. Granted, beauty products are tough becuase everyne has a different chemistry, but others may have a similar experience like you did. Its refreshing to see something so honest. Hope you have a great weekend!!

    1. Thank you Amanda! And I totally agree - beauty products are the toughest to review specifically because of that! That's why I didnt want to write a totally "this is a bad product" type review, because I definitely do think (or at least hear) that its great for some people!

  6. I love your honesty! If you can't be honest, it negates the whole point of doing a review in the first place. You do have gorgeous hair naturally, lucky girl! I've never been one to use a lot of products in my hair, just because it's fine, it tends to get a little greasy with too much going on!

And aw thanks for the hair compliment too!! Some days it feels like I have a mane haha. You can't really tell in photos, but my hair is INSANELY thick. Like seriously, I have had multiple hair dressers say I have the thickest blonde hair they have ever seen (since it's usually so thin!).

And Im the same - I dont like to use too many products either!

  8. I think it's great that you were honest about it. And for what it's worth, your review didn't put me off the product or the company, because I know that everyone is sort of different regarding the needs for skin & hair care. Maybe I'm a weirdo, but products that appear on many blogs at the same time and always are raved about, those are the ones I rarely actually feel like trying.

  12. I personally like the masks myself, but it could partly be because I am in love with the ritual of setting aside time to do the whole face mask/hair mask routine- hence why I'm always on the hunt for a great hair mask to "cure" my dry ends. With that being said, your review is a breathe of fresh air! If everyone liked the same product there wouldn't be the need for "new" and better things to search for. For you to be in a position to influence tons of readers, as a first time reader of your blog, you've gained a new follower, credibility is HUGE and I respect your honesty when you have the platform that you do. Thank you!
